By the way...
  • JM's upstairs trying out Stephen King's habit of writing to loud rock music. A's still sick; she's on the couch sticking cloves into lemons. 30NOV09
  • We slept in this morning. JM is doing his algebra, but A is sick in bed. 30NOV09
  • Just used the Kitchen-Aid meat grinder attachment The Man gave me for my birthday(!) to grind up some lamb for burgers tonight. Messy. 23NOV09
  • JM is working on his novel; A is practicing piano. School will be finished before lunch today! 23NOV09
  • The Goobs are having a heated discussion about how early humans might have shaved. WTF? 23NOV09
  • Adults who ask children what they will do when they "get out into the real world" should be smacked. Repeatedly. 23NOV09

This is Not the Ugliest Tomato in the World

But I bet it's pretty darn close.  It's a brandywine.

I have to say that I do not see why people make such a big fuss over these tomatoes.  After reading all the hype, I was expecting this divine tomato experience that would change my life forever.  Didn't happen.  They taste like the tomatoes I buy at the grocery store - no better, no worse.  I deem them "not worth the effort."

It didn't taste better than a hot house tomato? I would have thought that it would have given you the BEST tomato possible in appreciation for you killing all those worms.

:0 Rats!!! I was hoping yours would do well. I have grown brandywine tomato plants and I was not impressed with them. They looked like your pictures and if I let them stay on the vine until they were fully red, the cracks would start growing mold. Despite their large size, they were the lowest yielding tomato plant that I have ever grown. Because I had to throw away most of the crop, the yield was truly dismal.

My favorite tomatoes to grow are those that yield medium to large sized fruit (up to 16 oz), such as Park's Better Boy and for good measure, I have always planted several cherry tomato plants. I'd like to try the Arkansas Traveler, the fruit size on those are considered medium, 6 to 8 oz.

    You were robbed!

You can always use the ugly thing for target practice. :D

    I like Sheri's idea. :)

I never had luck with tomatoes either. Mine always looked like that. Sorry they didn't turn out better.

Oh, one more thing. Your top picture reminds me of the Wizard of Oz. I think because of the hat-like shape. haha

Donna, I'm sorry you didn't have success with your brandywines, but I am also relieved because it means it isn't just me. LOL I should have planted more than one type of tomato. I wonder if it's too late to plant a cherry tomato plant, one of the determinate ones that will look good on the patio.

CC, I think these are the most ungrateful plants I've ever had. LOL

I'm sorry that your tomatoes are proving to be difficult and ungrateful for your efforts to keep the safe.

Your photography skills are great though. :)

LOL, Tressa you rock. I had to scroll back up and look but, yes, indeed it does look like that hat.

At least they are inexpensive at the store, right?
